Born in 1982 in a city near Stuttgart (Germany) Matthias Vogt grew up in a home always filled with music and arts. So making music, painting and handcraft were a natural part of his childhood. At an age of 8 years started attending piano classes and soon developed the wish to become a professional musician. Starting his first studies in classical repertoire he discovered in adolescence jazz and blues music through his father, a passionate guitar player, and fell in love with popular music and improvisation which would guide all his further musical career.

After school Matthias Vogt became a student with the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart and completed the teacher-training course in music in 2011 and then started a long journey to Brazil which would last more than 10 years. Brazilian music had already caught his interest for the richness of harmony, rhythm and expression by artists like Egberto Gismonti, Toninho Horta or Eliane Elias.

Not only music but also his interest in nature would play a major role in Matthias Vogt’s life from the very beginning. Growing up strolling through the forests near his home, caring for plants in his parents garden and later the frequent birdwatching excursions formed a lifelong relationship which influences his art and music until today. Over the years Matthias Vogt’s hobby of drawing and painting plants, landscapes and especially birds became the place to integrate the creative and scientific side of his character. A successful product for this integration turned to be the graphic series Passarinhada Musical featuring songs about Brazilian bird species which later became a concert format.

The residence in São Paulo meant at the same time a profound process of learning and performing as a musician. Experiencing the diversity of musical manifestations in the big city and especially in the suburban areas influenced strongly Matthias Vogt's way of thinking and performing music as a collective and improvised art. But also the possibility to music classes with Marcus Teixeira, Sizão Machado and Alex Buck at the School of Music of the State of São Paulo EMESP Tom Jobim and workshops and private classes with Jovino Santos Neto and Fabio Torres let him dive deeper in the universe of Brazilian popular music.

Today Matthias Vogt’s collected works as composer and arranger are decisively influenced by Brazilian popular music and comprises tens of original songs (mostly in Portuguese language) and instrumental compositions as well as a bunch of arrangements of Brazilian tunes for diverse ensembles and bands. As instrumentalist and/or producer Matthias Vogt developed and integrated over the years a considerable variety of musical projects and bands like Quinteto Amazonas, Raizzama Trio and Jazz100Strezz.
